Re: WHAT IS THE BEST OUTSIDE TEMP FOR MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE ? (Cal Vette)
The lower the air temperature, the more dense is the air and the fuel injection keeps the air/fuel ratio constant so the lower the air temp, the more air and fuel molecules are burning in your cylinders making more hp. The colder, the better! Cold air is just like supercharging.

0* Kelvin
Ummm...you wouldnt have to worry about the coldness turning you into a block of ice...you wouldnt even exist at that theoretical temperature (or lack thereof)
Re: WHAT IS THE BEST OUTSIDE TEMP FOR MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE ? (Cal Vette)
Here's a thought: The flash point for gasoline is -40 F (or C for that matter) So, below that - you'll need to heat the incoming charge to get it to ignite.
Of course the coolant will be a block of ice and the belts might not flex. Traction would be an issue too!!!

Temp is really just one weather characteristic that impacts performance. Ultimately, you will have a combination of weather. As we have all read, the closer to sea level, theoretically the better a car will perform. As such, many bracket racers and heads-up racers own a weather station that calculates "adjusted altitude". You enter severl weather readings and your static atltitude into a computer and it calclulates number for you that is used as corrected and applies a baseline for all tuners and racers to compare.
The weather pieces used are temp, humidity, and baramotric pressure. Each of which has a dramatic impact on the amount of oxygen per measure of air.
Cooler air is compressed, thus more 02 in the same volume.
Less humid air has less water per measure of volume, and since you can't burn water, low humidity is also a benefit.
Also, the higher the baromoeter, the more atmospheric pressure exists. This means that the atmosphere itself is compressing the air even more so there is more 02 per volume of air.
So, ideally, we would run our cars on a cool, dry day with a high barometer.
I know that was a really long answer and probably way more than you were wanting.
Re: WHAT IS THE BEST OUTSIDE TEMP FOR MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE ? (Cal Vette)
Colder, more dense air makes more hp as stated above. One problem with cold temp is if the tires become too cold to hook up. I ran into this problem last fall with my AWD vehicle in 40 degree weather, my tires became too cold.

0* Kelvin :D
ACTUALLY, the correct way to state Kelvin is 0 Kelvin, as degrees is not a unit of measurement for Kelvin. :p:
So, 1 Kelvin, 0% humidity, at sea level would be ideal, because at 0 Kelvin, all atomic motion ceases. Of couse, you would also have to have one hell of a heater inside to keep you from ceasing to exist, also! :jester
