John, what kind of oil pan are you using and did you have any clearance problems with it and your 396 stroke? I have a Canton pan that I ran with my 383 and had no problems. I am hearing a noise that I hope is the oil pan being hit but don't really know what it is yet. The engine only has about 10-15 miles on it, so it is not likely any thing terribly wrong. I have a small base cam and the mechanic made sure everything cleared before I picked the engine up. I put the oil pan on but didn't notice anything as I turned the engine to adjust the valves.

Also, have you come up with an inlet tube setup yet?

I'm using the stock oil pan.
The rods and crank, Oliver and Carillo were clearanced to fit the stock pan. As far as I know the builder didnt have any problems with the pan.
He's come up with an idea for the inlet tubing.
He's using some kind of reinforced fiberglass ducting.
Its supposed to be the same ducting used on Winston Cup cars.
As of right know its still being installed I dont know completely if its going to work yet.

Make sure you watch your oil presure during hard accelleration. When I was using the stock pan, I would see my oil pressure dropping as the RPMs increased when I was getting on it. The problem went away after getting the canton pan. I'm pretty sure mine is hitting the pan now. I put a stethescope on the pan this morning and it sure sounds like it. I guess it is time to drop the pan and see.

The oil pressure would go up when I first kicked it and then would gradually go down to about 20 psi or so at full throttle. After I put the canton oil pan on there it stayed normal. I pulled the pan last night and found a couple of places where the crank was hitting it. I heated and banged those places out this morning before work. Hopefully this weekend I can get it going again and then put the t-trim on. Of course I will have to start putting some sort of inlet pipe together then. I guess we need to go to a bigger filter also??

I talked to the tuner today he said the ducting that he is using appears to be working OK.
He said the car sounded a lot better.
He should be tuning it by tommorrow.
If I get the car back next week I can let you know exactly what he used.
He did get another filter that is open at the top. I don't know what brand.
