You must have been there after hours, I guarantee someone would have been :smash: the starter before the DVOM or VAT machines came out. The hammer is great for stubborn starters and fuel pumps. Sorry I didn't catch the post earlier.
FWIW....For others with similar symptoms, have a friend turn the key to crank while you hit the starter, 9 times out of 10 the solenoid has become stubborn and can be broken loose. If your car cranks but doesn't start and has spark, bang on the bottom of the fuel tank while cranking, this will often kick start the fuel pump. PS, replace the failed part, at this point your on borrowed time.
glad you got it figured........sounded like vats to me.......but usually the most simplist of solutions is the answer to the toughest problems. I had the vats problem once, never saw it again and the car has started for 3 years now. Not sure why it had a problem except that it was raining real hard........but the car never leaked but it was freaky because I only had the car for 2 months or so........thought I was screwed with a no start........ :mad .....waited 10 minutes and blam.......it started and i was off......freak of nature......good luck with your new starter.....
scorp that was the first thing I did. Its definately the starter....even out of the car hooked to a 12V source it was sticking, then when it finally did run, it was very weak.
Me and you both jessie, our damn starters don't wanna work.
For me, it's my starter in my truck. I've only got 10:1 compression though, but it's like it doesn't wanna stay stuck. I shimmed it to an "acceptable" clearance range, and it started up fine for a few days, then one day, it just started grinding again...stupid Kragen's starter! So, I'm gonna take it down to the place that built my motor and ask them what they think...It's prolly a warped flexplate (which means the tranny has come out :()
I just got another one before I jacked it up. But I found that the copper nuts that hold the contact bolts where the + wire hooks up loosened allowing the contacts in the solenoid to shift so when I tried to start the car, it wouldn't because the contacts didn't line up anymore to transfer power to the system. A simple tightening of the nuts and bolts on the solenoid would have saved me $125.00.
You might look at that as well.
BTW, if you put a new starter in, be careful around the knock sensor. It's right in the way and I broke mine with a slip of the racket.
Oh it get better. I decided today after getting home from golfing. Which I won the longest put of the day  Not sure what I won, YET.
Anways. Had the rest of the day off, so I figured the starter would be here at about noon or so. I call to get a tracking number to just make sure from JEGS. Lady sounds a little baffled on the phone, then she finds the order I placed, but informs me that it was never processed. :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad
I am so pissed! I refuse to order from Summit, as for the reason I placed the order through Jegs. Now with that first order after summit screws me around a few times. This happens with them. IDIOTS.
Well looks like I'm gonna see if NAPA has any on the shelf out there. Make sure its got a lifetime warrenty and and bet a million dollars that it too konks out at the next worst possible time.
Can't buy or even order anything any more that is decent. :mad :mad
