We just put headers on... everything there worked great but now the spark plug boots are all but touching the pipes. I'm wondering if I can heat wrap the boots?.
I'll do just about anything to avoid taking the headers back off and wrapping them.
Two thoughts. Personally, I hate header wrap, but 2-3 inches on each tube at the plug boots may help. Have you tried a set of the "shorty" spark plugs? Good luck, and...
Well, first of all, he's talking about wrapping the spark plug boots, not the header primaries. You are very right, however, that it's a bad idea to wrap headers...they tend to rot under the wrap.
As CFI mentioned, you can get spark plugs which are specifically designed for header applications, and they are generally shorter than standard plugs. Those are one option, but thermal sleeves over the plug wire boots are a good idea.
I know that SHE is speaking of wrapping the boots. As much as I dissapprove of header wrap, I am suggesting that a couple of inches, per primary tube, shouldn't hurt. The feaders wouldn't have to be removed to do this.
Thanks guys! I ran up to AutoZone and picked up the shortys. Once the socket's dislodged from the old #5 I can finish putting them in. They're just short enough to give me the space I'm going to need.
Thanks guys!!
PS.. how illegal is it to run without the rest of the exhaust? *faint* I started it up today with just the headers and it sounds gooooooooood! :hurray:
it's not illegal unless ya get caught :D LOL
We're going to find out tomorrow... the headers and the factory exhaust meet up at different angles so I have to take it somewhere to be shaped. I'm thinking of driving it to Fort Collins :reddevil
