Smoother Throttle – removed small spring
I discovered a small spring at the top of the throttle pedal. It’s about 1 inch long and sometimes was fully compressing and sometimes only half or less – making the position of the throttle very unprecise.
My 88 is converted to RH Drive so the throttle cable may not be standard, maybe the normal cable doesn’t have this spring. At the cable end there was also a plastic fitting with 4 small sprigs that looked like they lock into a hole – these were also allowing about 1/32” movement. So I cut them off and removed the spring by unwinding it from the cable.
I’ve waited a week before posting the result. I wanted to be sure. My throttle is now predictable, my starts are smooth as. It took 2 days to get used to it and another few days of subconscious foot tuning. A simple, cheap and complete cure.
It wasn’t easy to get to the top of the throttle pedal, I took out the seat and laid on my back under the steering wheel – I nearly got stuck there ! I couldn’t do the job in that postion as I could only get one hand up there so I eventually removed the cable from the throttle and pulled it out of the firewall into the engine compartment. Then the job was easy and the seat doesn’t have to be removed but I needed to see what the problem was first.
Is that spring standard ? or do I have a throttle cable from something else ?
