I have an 86 that dies when the temp reaches 220 - 230 and will not restart until it has cooled down. The car runs hot, 220 - 230. Before reading the various the various posts on related problems and have done the following:
Replaced the coil, module and rotor did not help.
After reading the posts I did the following:
Replaced the MAF relays let the car reach operating temp. then let it idle until temp reached 230, with the A/C off, shut the car off tried to restart it started ran rough then quit. The cooling fans are working when the car is running. Before replacing the MAF relays the car would not start until it completely cooled down. This only happens during hot weather, in cool weather no problems.
The next thing I will check is the fuel pump and the associated wiring. I am not sure what else I can check? Any ideas would be greately appreciated. Tripple A is getting tired of me.
Re: 86, Dies when hot, will start after cool down (Tonytz06)
Its when it won't start hot is when you need to do some measurements to find out why. See if you have spark, see if you have fuel pressure on the injector rail, see if your injectors are being pulsed. Engines need air, spark (and at the right time), and fuel in order to run. You are missing one or more.
Re: 86, Dies when hot, will start after cool down (jfb)
Hello, and thank you for the respone. I checked all of those items before changing things out. Have spark, fuel at the rail and injectors pulse. Engine turns over fine but something is just not allowing it to start. If I wait a few minutes it will start but when it reaches a temp of over 220 is when it will shut down. If the outside temp is cold no problem. Where I live it gets hot, today 110.
Re: 86, Dies when hot, will start after cool down (Tonytz06)
I had the same thing happen to my 89. Driving down the road when BAM it just dies. Let it sit and cool down and it would fire right back up. I had to change a module located on the top of the distributor. Heres the part number from the Ecklers website. Part# 29185
I hope that helps. If you try this the module should come with a thermoelectric gel. If the gel dries out it causes the module to shut down also. Just one more thing to try.
