The only reason I'd be going to a '96 opti is because I hear that the dowel pin on the cam gear drives the opti-- is that correct?
If the above is correct, I could update to a '96 timing cover and opti, install a larger cam dowel... and it should work? Who has done it?
I do not need to use the reluctor ring with the '96 opti because I'm using '93 electronics.
The main reason for doing this is because the heads/cam combo of this car has a very high spring rate that most single chains will not endure. Cloyes makes a heavy duty single timing chain set for the '93 but it's only an accident waiting to happen.
Re: '96 Opti Compatible with '93 Electronics ?? (Aquaman)
If you don't want to use an electric pump, then the 95 set with the GM extreme duty timing set is what you'll need. With an electric pump you can use a Cloyes full double roller chain. Don't bother messing with the 96 stuff because it uses the crank postion sensor. You will need the longer dowel if you switch to the later opti unit. If you are interested in the extreme duty timing set, drop me an email. I decided to switch to the Meziere pump and the Clozes double chain and can make you a good deal on the set. I had it installed, but was never run. Here is a before and after picture. :steering:

Actually, use the '95 timing cover since it doesn't have the OBDII reluctor sensor output, one less thing to leak. I'm going to do this when I install a Hotcam and P/P heads. Still collecting parts and such. Ordered the 160 stat from Summit yesterday....
Re: '96 Opti Compatible with '93 Electronics ?? (Aquaman)
To use a 95 opti you will need the 95 cover, the longer dowel pin for the cam, and a connector for the engine harness. The 92 is different than the others. I'm not sure how many different versions of the connector GM used, but you can change out the one on your old unit. As Goody said, don't bother trying to use the 96 cover. Thanks for participating! If anyone else has any ideas, please post it.
The way it looks now I'll order the '95ish timing cover and the 95ish optispark. Putting the longer dowel in the cam is not an issue. With that setup, I should then be able to run a true double roller timing chain. :flag
Re: '96 Opti Compatible with '93 Electronics ?? (Aquaman)
Jeremy, to use the double roller you also have to use a electric water pump (Meziere seems to be the perferred). Also check you harness connector from the opti to the engine harness. Here is a picture of the 92 Here's my Dynaspark billet opti :steering:
