This is a guess: When the first one broke, did you get all of the ribbon out? It should have been the same length as the new one. Perhaps , a small piece was left in your motor winding system and the new one grabbed the winding wheel, went down in but many ups and downs of the antenna may have weakened the new one by additional pressure applied to the winding wheel ie. too much ribbon wound back on. You may have to remove antenna motor and open up the assembly to see if there are any small pieces of ribbon ground up. Not much fun, you have to remove inner fender well to get at motor.

I replaced the mast on my 89 some months ago. There was more ribbon broken off inside the motor than left on the antenna mast. Unless you remove the old ribbon, you have not fixed your problem!!! Removing the motor is about a 2 -3 hour job and you need to raise the left rear and remove the wheel. If you need instructions on doing this, I will email you the steps from my 89 Helms manual.
