I have a vacuum leak from my brakes, I have been told by friends it is the vacuum booster. I removed the dash panel that covers it and the leak does not seem to be coming from the vacuum hose going into it. How hard is it to replace or fix the booster and how much will it cost?

Re: Bad brake booster? (amswak)
 I have SIG feature turned off, so maybe this question is answered in your sig...What year is your car?
I believe, and I certainly could be wrong, that most brake boosters are mounted on the firewall, just behind the Master Cylinder. Not behind the Dash!
The first sign of a bad booster or a lack of vacuum is very firm brake pedal, lots of push and very little stop!
Sometimes you can hear a vacuum leak when you step on the brakes.
There are two major components that can go bad (probably more than two) One is the vacuum line from the manifold to the booster( aleak here will reduce or eliminate the necessary vacuum) and the diaphram in the booster itself.
If you aren't getting the symptom of very hard pedal and lots of effort to stop the car, then problems may not be in the brake booster.
I have an 87. I followed the sound of the vacuum leak to the top of my brake pedal. there is a plastic assembly with a vacuum tube going into it. the tube is not the source of the leak. I guess I will go price the boosters tomorrow.
