I just replace my alternator yesterday and ive got a brand new battery. Last night on the highway i made it about 10 miles and my volts dropped below 10. I turned around and sped the whole way home and when i got into my driveway she was dead. Any ideas? Could it just be a bad alternator? thanks
Slipping belt maybe? Check your tensioner and be sure it is within the proper range. Belt could be worn out or stretched. Contact on battery posts could be bad. Ground wire to engine/chasis might be loose.
Could be a bad new alternator. Pull it out and take it to a place that will check it for free, like Autozone.
If the components are good then the problem is likely to be the paths between them. I would still look at the belt first.
Make sure that you have installed the batt and alt correctly. The cables to the batt must be
secure. Check the alt wiring for any connection problems. Charge the batt. Before you start your vette, measure the voltage of the batt (should be about 12.5 +/-). Start your vette with all accessories "off". Now measure the voltage at the batt again with the engine "on" (should be about 14.2 +/-). If the voltage reads the same as when the engine was "off", replace the alt.
Even with a faulty alt, a fully charged batt will not go "dead" in ten minutes, even with your lights on. You may have a "short" that is drawing excessive current.
