As long as you're painting a C4, I'll go ahead and make a recommendation.
HVLP. Only way to go. If the job is gonna take a few months, don't buy a cheap one. By cheap I mean, one from "Harbor Freight" that costs $39.99. A good gun from a reliable paint supply shop, maybe $75 to $125.
Edit: Opps, I forgot 1 thing, gravity feed, but make sure the cap fits real tight. They sell rubber ones that wont leak if you tip it too much.
The real trick is to keep the gun clean. Leave a little reducer in it between shoots, and get a stand 4 it so it sits upright.
Most likely I won't end up painting the entire car. For now, just the fender flares. Maybe get into more stuff down the line. One of the Campbell Hausfeld's good enough for the flares?
Ah, ok - i thought gravity feed would be bad.. guess not :).
In that case, a cheapo would be fine, shouldn't take more than a weekend to do all 4 flares right? Just make sure you get a nice even flow from the beginning. Use a test piece of material, sheet metal works better than wood 4 testing......
Thanks! Since i've never painted anything like this before - what kind of paint should i use? Glossy black then clear coat? How many coats? I'm told Krylon is the best brand.
my suggestion to you is just go have a reputable shop spray those for you...if you add up the cost of a gun and all the supplies primer/sealer , base coat, and then your clear and activators and thinners for cleaning you would probally pay less having it done profesionally and it will get done right the first time...
trust me ya don't just pick up a gun and stating squirting color and having it look good...it's taken me years to teach myself how to paint.. and yes trial and error is part of it :( well just my 2 cents
Re: Need paint gun recommendations.. (1989redvette)
:iagree:
I just bought a new license plate cover for my coupe from the dealer. It needed to be painted to match my flame red paint. I have access to all the right equipment here at work but to buy all the necessary supplies (basecoat, clear, reducer, hardener, flex additive, etc...) was going to cost over $100 - (for a $25.00 part) and that was only for a pint of color and a pint of clear!!! For such a small job, I would suggest taking it to a pro. If the flares can be taken in seperate, often times you can find a shop that will spray them relatively inexpensively.
