Well long story short...my outer door seal dry rotted way past it's "I need to replace it stage" and now I have some really really bad scratches on the passenger side window that can not be buffed out. I didn't even know it was doing it until I detailed it today....I guess I am neglecting it :nono: Anyway, anyone ever change the glass? How hard is it and how much $$$ does new or used go for?
I got new glass from a body shop about $130 each for PPG. plan on taking alot of time adjusting the new glass to fit. I wish I had the tool for removing the glass monting bolts, I had to use two flat screwdrivers
On your '88 it is rather easy to remove the window glass.
After you remove the inner panel there is a light-weight Al panel that comes out. From there you can raise the window enough to remove it from the lift sisor. Then you can lift the glass up out of the door.
Of course you should replace the anti-rattle pads before installing the new window glass.
You may be able to get a used glass from Contemporary Corvette, link on my site.
Once the door panel is off, roll the window down until you can access the bolts holding the glass to the regulator. You may have to roll it up or down just a little for the nuts to line up with the holes in the door. The glass is about 2/3s down at this point. You might need to remove the door weatherstrip at the leading edge in order to get the glass past out. Also the glass felts have to be removed along with the upper door edge glass stops. Some doors didn't have the section cut out about 1/4 the way back from the front edge of the glass along the top of the door. You many have to cut this out to get the black plastic stop past the top edge of the door. As you remove it you'll see where it has to go in order to slide the glass out. A word of caution when drilling out the rivets. Don't press too hard, I've seen the drill go right through the outside of the door. Now you need to do bodywork, paint, blah, blah.
Thanks for the help guys! Well...I have already replaced the outside seal.... it did etched it..real bad...it will catch a fingernail easily...so there is no doubt it will need to be replace...I was going to get the windows tinted this week but I guess I will have to wait until I get new glass...
I've seen the used glass as low as $40 on Ebay. Keep in mind that shipping will be calculated on an oversize package. I think I paid around $60 shipped. Used glass locally for you might be better. Just make sure it doesn't have any scratches regardless where you get it.
And don't forget to treat that new section of door seal with some silicone or bum grease smeared on your index finger AT LEAST twice a year or you'll be in the SAME boat five years from now! :nono: :yesnod:
