I just installed a rebuilt Z51 rack to replace leaking stock rack. In order to have one full turn in either direction my steering wheel is 1/4 turn off normal.
Is it simple enough to pull steering wheel and center it? On my 68 camero it was a 5 min job with no grief. How about the vette?
i'd suggest first to make sure it is not your toe alignment.
btw, i tried to do what you are suggesting on my 92 and found the steering wheel is keyed so i couldn't just snap it back on at another angle. not sure if this will be case on your 86.
If I remember correctly from doing mine this winter, there is only one way to reinstall the steering shaft onto the rack. If your 86 is the same as my 87, there is a lineup mark on the steering shaft and on the steering wheel itself. You can see these once you remove the center cap and the telescope mechanism and hold down nut. If you separated the steering shaft at the rubber connection under the hood, is it possible you put it back together 1/4 turn out? I can't remember if 1/4 turn out is possible.

Looked there and it seems there is only 180 degrees of change available.
There is only one position to mount intermediate shaft to rack.
And you say there is only one position to mount steering wheel to colum.
Thats WHACK !!
In order for me to center my steering wheel i will have to adjust my tie rod lengths and the end result will be 3/4 turns in one direction and 1 1/4 turns in the other direction of steering wheel travel. :mad
There has to be another way !!! ANYONE !!
86, I didn't say there is only one position for the steering wheel. I said that there is allignment marks which I believe is the way it would have come from the factory. If you have to, you can turn the wheel on the spline but why you should have to is puzzling.
Moving toe the same direction on both sides should move the steering wheel. In other words, if you adjust the driver's side tie rod to pull the front of the wheel in (toe-in), and adjust the passenger side tie rod to push the front of the wheel out (toe-out) the same amount, the net result is "no change" in the toe-in measurement but instead a change in the steering wheel position.
Does this make sense? I believe I've got this right ... figured it out thru experimenting with it back a few weeks ago when I was adjusting my camber. Can somebody verify this is the case?

By adjusting toe that much takes away from the ability to make one full turn to the right and the left.
I have adjusted toe to set steering wheel which leaves you with 3/4 of a turn to the right and 1 1/4 turns to the left. You can imagine what happens now. Right turn 3 block radius
Left turn 30 foot radius
Does this make any sense :D
Does anyone know for sure about the ability to remove wheel and re-alighn
Sorry Arbee, It didn't sink in till now that you just have MARKS. I guess the post from Tempest talking about a keyed shaft got me all fouled up. I will dig into this when i come back from camping.
Thanks Arbee !!
Thanks Siveck !!

I emailed the remanufacturer about it.
I'm curious to hear they have to say!!
I straightened out my steering wheel problem today. As posted by Arbee and Siveck the shaft is not keyed on my 86. It turns out that the removal and alighnment of the steering wheel is one of the easiest iv'e ever done. Now on to better things. Carbon fibre dash :D
Thanks to all those who replied !!
