A/C Problems, any suggestions?
My 96 GS's a/c is acting up. The compressor kicks on, but all of the vents on the dash are not working. The lower vents underneath the dash and the defrost vents are functioning. I've checked the fuses and they are alright. My mechanic is backed up and is not taking any appointments for at least a week, but he suspects the a/c programmer underneath the dash to be bad which is about $600--OUCH! Has anyone had a problem similar to this and if so a cure?

When I see this type problem, most suggest checking the vacuum connections on the engine. If you have a service manual, check out the schematics and for the vacuum signal that opens the vent. I would not spend big money on a new controller until I knew the control was getting vacuum from the engine.

This has all the symptons of a vacuum leak. Check under the hood for a loose or broken vacuum line. Then check under the dash to make sure everything is hooked up there.

Have a look under your passenger fuel rail cover. There is a black plastic vacuum check valve there that tends to deteriorate over time. They're cheap. It supplies vacuum to the A/C I believe. Is your Cruise woirking?

It is more than likely the programmer. I followed the advise in this link and bought a rebuilt one from the 'last detail' for less than $200 and installed it myself. You can replace it in less than an hour for the first try. Check out this site and let me know if you need more instructions. http://www.hashmarks.com/techtips/ac_problems.htm

I don't mean to sound like an azz when I say this, but are you sure that it just isn't doing what it is suppose to do? When I hit Auto on my A/C, it turns on the lower vents and the dash vents for a few minutes before it turns on the ones that aim right at the passangers. I just turn down the A/C fan speed to 8, and it kicks right on.

RAY Quayle said it...check under the passenger fuel rail cover first. There's a black plastic vacuum switch under there. The AC in my 96 was acting up and it turned out to be that 5 dollar part.
Check the cheap and simple stuff first or you may get HOSED by one of these repair shops. Some shops will stick it to you even if they do find a cheap part.
