Default LT1 hub not keyed??

I got the hub off today, that was FUN! :cuss

taking the puller off I may have moved the crank :mad

The hub isn't keyed to the crank.

Also, the mark on the hub is a good 4 inches from the rib on the cover.

So what's the tollerance on getting it lined back up.

Where should the pin on the camshaft be?
On the later optis the camshaft is exposed when it's removed.

Thanks

Brian Put the #1 cylinder at TDC line up the timing marks on the timing gears. Look at the hub and note the point thats cast into the hub. this lines up with the timing mark on the crank gear. Now, unless you marked the balancer when you took it off. You may be SOL, still, you have 3 trys to get it correct. for 90 you can get a keyed hub thru Thunder racing the keyway is machined in the crank.

The stock hub is the real achilles heal of the LT1. Why the factory never used a keyed hub when the crank is keyed is beyond me. I would step up to a keyed hub since you have it off. If you ever put a supercharger on it, it should be manditory.

I can only think because the engine is internally balanced and the crank signal is taken from the crankshaft sensors...it does not even need an alignment mark or keyed hub.

Of course...I agree if you are to use a supercharger, you better put a key in it.

I forgot, their should be a triangle cast into the front of the balancer that will be the mark to line up with the hub. (sorry I have an aftermarket balancer on my car)

I found the triangles on the balancer, and the hub.

The hub, at least mine, has balance holes on one side.

So do the triangles line up with the crankshaft slot?
Then I don't have break the valvecover and timing cover gaskets.
thanks!

[answering own question]
That would be a NO, it's nowhere near there.
[/answering own question]

I put it back on as near as I could get it.
Tried starting it, no fire, that waterpump is not on yet, so it may not kick over w/o coolant installed.

but at least it seemed in balance.
Next time I do this I'll do what the factory should have done, installed a keyed hub! :mad
