EGR allows exhaust gas back into the intake only during midrange RPM. Not at idle or WOT. The exhaust gas has the effect of displacing oxygen which means you are running richer and this should reduce pinging. If you remove or disable the EGR you would be running a little leaner and you might get some ping. At least this is true in theory. I have not actually had this occur with my EGR disabled.
If you do have some ping you can retard the timing or run a higher octane of fuel.
On some cars, yes the EGR disabled can make the engine ping like a **** on part throttle.Ive noticed on the forum,it seems alot of L98 engines dont seem to have a ping problem with the EGR bypassed.I would suggest to have a scanner plugged in and test drive to be sure you arent getting any ping.Sometimes you cant hear it and the scanner would tell you knock if there was any.
Reason to be safe, pinging can eventually crack a piston.EGR actually cools the combustion chamber around 500 degrees on part throttle or midrange,to reduce emissions mainly and thats why bypassing it can cause the cylinders to get a bit too hot at times causing the ping.
Other ways around it is to have the prom programmed to not use EGR and have the timing tables set up for it.
