I suppose those gains are possible if the fuel & spark curver were off the mark; that is what the chip does for your engine along with coolant fan control.
But then dropping coolant temp from 200deg to 170 deg can yield ~10hp.

Generic chips are worthless, dont waste your money on them.
What they really do is lower your fan settings, which keeps temps down which allows you to bump up the timing. Thats where the power is.
But you can install a 160 thermo, fan switch, and accomplish the same thing much cheaper.

I ran a Jet stage 2 chip in my car for awhile, but I sold it when back to back track tests proved that I was quicker with the stock chip :yesnod:

I just picked up a '96 a week ago and it had a stage 1 chip in it. I took the chip out yesterday afternoon, and I swear the car is quicker and funner to drive now.

I could never swallow that high performance CHIP crap. They are over priced as well.
Significant power changes in an engine come from physical modifications... Mods that bring in more air and gas. Make an engine breath more air and gas and it will produce more power. Chips can't make bigger valves, higher compression, force more air into the combustion chamber, improve exhaust flow...none of that....they are a wast of money. You have to be happy with how the engine runs from the factory or be prepared to pull it out and rebuild it with better pieces to get more power.
