Need help with trans (700-r4). Having problems getting it into drive.
Hey guys,
I just picked up an 1989 vette from my brother. The C4s are a blast! However, The car is having a problem shifting in to Drive. What happens is when you slide the shifter it seems like it wont lock into the gear. If you sort of slam it back from neutral to drive then it engages. All the other gears click right in, no problems. I don't know a whole lot about automatics, is there an adjustment that can be made, or is something worn in the shifter? I don't believe its the trans as there is not slipping and once it's in it doesn't pop out. Any tips?

I am thinking that the shifter cable needs to be adjusted. It sounds like the stop, or detent, for the shifter's 4th gear is not happening at the same time the transmission is hitting 4th gear. I've had a similar problem when we put the 700R4 in my 1980.
I just took it to a local trans. shop that was offering a special on trans fluid replacement and adjustment (it was like $29.99). I had them replace the fluid, the filter and gasket and adjust the cable. After that it's been pretty good to me.
