He should be using OBD1. If so, jumper wire between A and B pins on the terminal under the dash (driverside;over your right knee). Watch the SES lite in the panel. Will flash 1 then 2 three times. Then count the flashes for the codes. The code flashes will flash 3 times each and then return to 1 / 2 when complete. The error codes are listed somewhere on CF and are also in most of the manuals.

Jumper the A and G. That turns the digital portion of the dash into a code reader.
