When i back off the accelerater at anything over 3,000rpm I will get a single or short series of backfires out the exhaust. Any ideas as to whats causing this? No codes and otherwise runs great. Its a 92 LT1.
I have a bike with a header on it that does the same thing. Most guys user a PCIIIr w/ a custom map to change the timing and advance based on throttle position and rpm. So say that it may burn the valves but thats on a 200hp,
73 cid (1200cc) engine that revs to 11,500. So not the same in many respects. Its good to hear that theres no residing it will hurt this or that which was my main concern.
Oh yeah it does sound cool coming outta the Hooker Aerochambers.
Mine started that too. It runs great otherwise. I like the sound, because it grumbles almost like it is growling and makes a few popping sounds. If you gear it down on decceleration you can really drag it out. :yesnod:

Re: Backfire on deacceleration???? (hotdawg1)
Mine does this very loudly now, it wasn't like this before. I can hear it over the motor at any speed, and I have glass-pak exhaust, so the car is pretty loud to begin with.
I'm sure that it's because of a blown header gasket, and a rich mixture. I have all the parts on my shelf, and in a week I'll have a garage to work in. :hurray:
Sounds like a very rich mixture....but you say it runs good otherwise?
Its actually a lean condition that causes this, what causes this is normally a exhaust or and intake upgrade that will make the engine flow better and therefore make it go a little lean, when off throttle. Its not a problem to do this, in fact all high performance engines will do it, check race cars just before entering corners where they downshift and you see fire spit out the pipes.
