The common opinion is that gear drives are just like straight-cut transmission gears which are horribly annoying to live with because of the noise. I've been wanting to try a gear drive myself to see what it's really like though. I love the sound they make from outside the car. When I try it out I'll just make sure to budget some back up cash for a regular timing chain.
I think they offer two versions, loud, with straight cut gears, and quiet, with helical gears...
I've never seen the helical gear version, but another problem immediately occurs to me with helical cut gears: thrust bearing problems. In a SBC, there are no thrust bearings for the cam, unless you add them (I'm not considering the '87 up "retainer" as a bearing; it locates the cam; it is not designed to take side loading). There's a lot of pressure put on the cam to "walk" back and forth under accel and decel if you add a helical gear drive.
Do these drives come with some kind of load-carrying bearings behind the cover???
