I am currently running with a bone stock unmodified MAF, and did my dyno runs last week like that. I should be getting another MAF for my car that I can modify (gut and remove screens), and will do a dyno again.
See if it helps anything... Should be done in 2 weeks.

Finally some real evidence, looking forward to the results.
I just came back from a ride after modifying mine. The butt-o-meter seems to feel better throttle response and improved pull (at least up to what the road permits). The good news is that is seemed just fine without the screens and the heat sinks. I also put on a cut lid as well, so the combination at least seems like a good thing.
I am a bit confused by this. (probably the drink, but ..), it seems to me that the biggest restriction in the inlet airflow is not the screens, or the poor TPI runners, (I feel a bit sorry for them), but the throttle butterfly valve!.
How is a small increase in flowthrough trhe MAF going to make any difference when you have a great big throttle blade impeding the flow? - unless you're at full throttle.
Having said that - I have removed the screens on mine.
At the next ECSCC I am going to try out a Wells MAF to compare the two. I currently use a completed gutted Bosch MAF. I doubt there will be a difference but it should be interesting.
I tried out the WELLS / Microtech (same design) new MAF and on my '85 I had a hunting idle solid from 500-900rpms.. Tried two new units. Was nto my car and wasn't a defective part. The engineer at the company swore up and down it was 'trubulence' caused by my mods that caused it.
Funny... Sicne I got a stock style Bosch reman, everything's been good..
I didn't get a hunting idle with the MAF but is a nasty propensity to set off a code 33. I noticed on the scantool that at idle I was getting about 20 gm/sec at idle versus 9-10 gm/sec with the gutted Bosch unit.
