Default Timing a cam

Is there any way that I can determine if cam is in right position
or tooth is missed, without taking off the timing cover?

You need a realtively expensive tune-a-cam kit that includes at least a degree wheel and a dial indicator... you would still have to remove the DS valve cover to put the dial indicator on number one intake valve. Once you establish number one at TDC you can see when the number one intake opens on the degree wheel and compare that with the specs on your cam card.

It's a lot of work. If you're going to the trouble you might as well go directly to the cam itself...pull the waterpump and cover...ouch... :seeya

How would the engine act if the cam was one tooth off?

Would it still be possible to adjust base timing?

If it were retarded it might be hard starting, if it were advanced it'll ping like crazy. Remember that plug location on the cap is arbitrary. If you don't want to pull the dist...move the wires. :seeya

It would run crappy, especially retarded. Even retarded a handfull of degrees, a mild cam will sound like an all out race cam. But your base ignition time can be set the same. Look for this as a last resort, not a fun project. By the time you disassemble the front to put a degree wheel on, you're over halfway there to pulling the cover.
