Default Proper spark plug gap?

I can't find any info on what I should set my gap to. I'm running 3 heat range plugs right now, but they are fouled from fuel. On the advice of several people, I'm going up two heat ranges to a 5. The current gap is .035. Should I stick w/ the same gap, or what?

damn. have you checked the web sites for the spark plug makers?

according to the NGK site, fouling is caused by:

Fouling

* Will occur when spark plug tip temperature is insufficient to burn off carbon, fuel, oil or other deposits
* Will cause spark to leach to metal shell...no spark across plug gap will cause a misfire
* Wet-fouled spark plugs must be changed...spark plugs will not fire
* Dry-fouled spark plugs can sometimes be cleaned by bringing engine up to operating temperature
* Before changing fouled spark plugs, be sure to eliminate root
cause of fouling

I know some of it's a "duh", but it makes me wonder if the heat range change will not fix it... I would also try going up to .040 for the gap...

:iagree: But here's an old hot rodders trick

Open the gap to .050, will give you a much larger exposed spark area and more power

but will also result in decreased plug life.

Well, right now I can't afford shorter plug life. I'm going back to the sandbox tomorrow and my wife will be driving it. I don't want her to have to deal with problems on the Vette. Maybe I will bump it up to .040 though.
