I just changed the oil in the ZF and it has made a world of difference. Every shift is as smooth as silk. I went with the synthetic castrol oil from the BMW dealer and so far I am extremely happy with the results. I got the required 17mm allen wrench from sears and an oil pump from autozone to get the stuff up into the trans. Took me no time at all once the car was in the air. I would highly recommend doing this if you trans doesn't seem to be shifting the way it should.
It takes 2.2 quarts. I stole an idea from someone on the forum on how to put oil into the tranny. A funnel, 4' of flexible hose and a 90 degree elbow. Slide the hose with the elbow attached down from the rear of the engine (up top) down to the tranny. Pour in 2.2 quarts and she's full. It's fast and no mess.
