Are you so sure? ...The roof being off led to the door being opened by reaching inside and hitting the power door lock switch...and so VATS was set off.
On the early VATS C4s, before the CCM, like your '87, there is no connection between the UTDS and VATS modules. If VATS is working properly, you can reach in unlock the door while UTDS is armed, open the door (setting of the alarm) and with horn blowing at the 50Hz rate, happily start your car and drive it down the road.

VATS = vehicle anti theft system
The "bead" in your key tells the car that everything is ok via a unique resistance I think. If moisture or a bad contact happens, everything shuts down. I wired mine out of circuit...too many times the ignition would do NOTHING...for about 15 minutes....then presto, everything normal again. This always seemed to happen at the pump or some other embarrasing situation.
Also, I wired out the horn alarm by grounding a wire in the passenger door cuz my neighbours were complaining when it would sound at 6:30 AM...
There are plenty of tech threads here about how to wire both systems out.
One other possible cause: I had the same intermittant no start when the starter solenoid was taking a dive. It would fail more frequently towards the end, but at first, it would only fail maybe 1 in 5 tries....just a thought.

thanks redvette, that cleared things up for me. Why people like these vettes (other than the feeling you get driving them) i haven't got a clue. hard to get in & out, their like women...fikeled..tempramental..they only start 28 days out of the month...high maintance.......whoops here comes my wife...gotta go........
