I took the roof off my vette today and went to a friends house. when i came out the car would not turn over.(everything else worked) the security light came on. after a while i put the roof panel on (looked like rain) and it started right up????? WTF
It could be a heat-soak issue (putting the top on let it cool down JUST enough?)
That used to happen with my van (heat soak, not the roof thing)... after 30 minutes cool down it'd start right up. I think it was either the battery or starter- can't remember which. Just an idea though.
maybe it's an alarm thing, did you lock and unlock it with the key?
I don't have an alarm system (that i know of) I just put the roof panel on, closed the windows, and it started...I tryed starting it about 20 times before that, and haven't had a problem since....these vettes are scary
The roof has nothing to do with it. since you said the security light was on, my guess is that the VATS kicked in. You usually have to wait a few minutes before you can try and start it.
This happened to me a few weeks ago for no apparent reason.
The roof is not part of your difficulty. Was the security light flashing???
Sounds like a VATS issue or a key that is worn or dirty. Swith to a backup key and if you don't have a spare, clean the one you have. Hand oil and prespiration may screw up your switch key. Another problem may be the position of the door lock when you unlock the door with the key. Make sure you have turned the key all the way when unlocking. Worn keys can cause many problems.

Doubt the roof had anything to do with it. Starter may be going and after it cooled off, it was fine; or something is up with the VATs - maybe the pellet had some moisture on it. Who knows, I'd stop by a local dealer and have the key checked.

:iagree:
VATS has a time out period. Can't remember off the top of my head what it is but it's in the Service Manual. Sounds like VATS kicked in and you had to wait for the time out. Maybe the resistor in your key made a bad connection?

That's an unpublished feature of the factory security system.
With the roof off anyone could jump in your Vette and try to hot wire it.
The security system saves your car from theft.
(isn't this April 1st ?)
:iagree: i was stuck one day 2 hours from home because of that stupid thing i never gave up sat there for about an hour of trying finally it started and hasnt done it since that was 3 or 4 months ago

Are you so sure? The roof led to the actions not possible when installed...such as:
...The roof being off led to the door being opened by reaching inside and hitting the power door lock switch...and so VATS was set off.
(You HAVE to unlock it with the key if you locked it with the power door lock switch when you got out in order to turn off theft protection.)
Does your horn work? If so, it probably would have blown repeatedly as you opened the door.
