Default Caliper bracket bolts

Hey Guys,

I'm replacing the front and rear brakes, pads and rotors. The
('94 LT1, standard brakes, going to use EBC Greenstuff/Powerslot)
GM manual says to discard the caliper bracket bolts and replace
with new ones, with a special adhesive coating. Do I need to
purchase these bolts or can I just clean the old ones and install
with some form of thread locker?

Thanks,

Ken

Use the old bolts, if their condition warrants it.

:withstupid:

I received the same advice from others on the forum, too... just put some thread-lock on them and make sure you get them good-n-tight... I think, if I remember right, the torque specs are 133 ft. lbs.

Clean the threads and add a bit of Fel-Pro Blue thread locker (the RED stuff requires heat to remove bolts!) Torque the front mounting bracket bolts to 166 (plus or minus 15) ft. lbs.

The rear mounting bracket bolts are tightened to 70 ft. lbs
The guide pin bolts are torqued to (Upper) 26 ft. lbs and (Lower) 16 ft.lbs.

Thanks for the torque specs, I'll also check my manual.
I have not had to take the rear brakes apart yet, so this
is my first experience with them. I noticed one dust boot
was torn, so I need to replace that. I looked quickly at the
setup. How does the pin come out to replace the boot? Do
I remove the bolt from the inside while putting a wrench
on the pin hex on the outer side?

Thanks

On the rear caliper, you put a ring spanner ( I don't know what you call them) on the bolt head on the inboard side of the upper pin, and an open-ended on the two flats on the inboard end of the pin. Remove this bolt and the caliper will then swing forward and down. This will give access to the top boot. Slide the whole caliper inward to remove it complete with lower pin to give access to the lower boot.

You may additionally have to take the big handbrake mechanism spring from the top of the caliper - I can't remember. I took mine off but I cant remember if I needed to.

Now is a good time to put some high temp grease on the pins. replace pads and reassemble.

The hard part is getting the spring back on, I used a piece of hooked wire to pull it on and then it was easy.

Another tip. when it is in bits, have a look how the handbrake mechanism pushes a pin on to the brake pad, and make sure it is aligned properly when you put it back together. Otherwise no handbrake.

I know this because i did this job last night, and today I have no handbrake

So tonight I will do it all again

Thanks,

I got mine to come apart.

Boy, I need longer wrenches, or bigger muscles.
 I wonder if they were ever apart before!

Without having a micrometer with me, what is the
difference between the front and rear rotors? Why
are the rears more expensive than stock fronts.
Supply and demand?

Ken

I know this one. The font and rear rotors (JL9) are identical but for one thing .This is the offset of the rotor from the hub. The fronts are approx 5mm deeper.

To put it another way if you were to lay a front and rear rotor face down on the table, the front would be 5mm taller.

So - you could use a front on the rear, with a 5mm spacer between the rotor and the hub, to move the rotor surface outwards.

To use a rear on the front. you would need to move the front caliper 5mm out somehow, probably by a spacer plate between the caliper and aluminium knuckle, but then the caliper may foul the wheel - I dunno.

Beats me why they didn't save manufacturing costs and make them both the same, for a measly 5mm.

The design of the hub, brakes, suspension, etc. probably takes precedence over having the front/rear rotors identical. With J55 the point becomes moot anyways.
