I put it up on jack stands tonight after changing the fluid out because it was leaking. I see it leaking (not oil) right behind the dampener. It's definitely power steering fluid. :mad The problem is I can't pinpoint the source of the leak. It's on the line that runs from the bottom of the reservoir down across the frame under the front of the crank and back up to the pump itself. I'm going to take the alt. off and move the A/C compressor out of the way this weekend to get a better look. I'm hoping it's leaking at the clamp between the pump and the tube and running down from there, because if it's not, then there's a hole in the tube! :mad
Anyone got any tips? Replaced the tube before? Had a similar problem?
A very common place it could be leaking is at the bottom of the res. If it is it, it runs right down the metal pipe. The nipples on the res or the bottom of the res can crack. Mine was leaking at the clamp from the pump to the pipe, but a lot of guys told me about the res. I also, took out the pump and replaced the seal. Dry as a bone now.

Mines dry under the res. When yours was leaking at the clamp, did it appear that it was leaking directly under the crank? That's what mines doing, but since you can't see the clamp without taking everything apart, I haven't been able to pinpoint it right now and it's driving me nuts!
I had the same problem, power steering fluid at the bottom of the cross over tube. I removed the pump and replaced the seal (IAW the service manual) and while I had the pump out, I replaced the rubber clamp that attaches the pump to the tube. It was very easy to work on with the A/C and alt out of the way. This job was actually where I found an oil leak which lead me to replacing my opti, water pump and plug wires and the list goes on. I hope you don't find what I did, but now that it is over, I feel more confident about my Vette.

Well the motor is a fresh rebuild so there better not be any leaks. GlockLT4 and I just replaced the opti about 3 weeks ago, as it's bearing failed after less than a year in service. I've got an electric water pump, so I know that's not leaking. It's not leaking from the pump any where, or on that hose from the pump to the clamp. I can't see any further than that right now.
Oh, and the MSD wires aren't but a year or two old as well. Hope I got all those "bases" covered.
It just seems strange to have a leak in that metal tube. But it's possible. Don't you just hate oil leaks. Oh, one last thing, is it possible that your leak is coming from the rack and just blowing back to the tube?

:iagree:
That was my problem.......took forever to figure it out.

So you're saying YOU HAD a leak in the metal tube? How did you fix it and can you give me a ballpark on the cost of the tube?
Seems like you are zeroed in on the tube leaking. Call Chris @ Superior 1-800-728-8267 and ask for a price and if it is available. I'd remove the tube and plug one end and find the leak before getting a new tube. Remember, that tube is not pressurized, it's just a return to the pump. If you take it out to look for that leak, look around where the bracket is welded to the tube. Is it possible that when you did all that work to your engine, that you might have damaged it? :smash:
If the 96 model is same as the 94 then it is pretty cheap.
Part number 26047453 for about $24. I changed mine too-not leaking though. It is held in by two pinch clamps and two bolts on the block-not bad to change.
Like what was said above, it isn't pressurized so if anything is leaking it probably is the pinch clamps at either end...I have installed double hose clamps to alleviate any possible leaks...
Check your PS resovoir-to-rack pipe. Mine was leaking big time. Replaced it and that stopped the leak. If you need one, call Superior Chevy at 800-728-8267 and ask for Chris. I think I paid like $33 bones plus shipping for mine.
Don't forget to top it off with fresh synthetic power steering fluid like Valvoline Syntec or RedLine. Your PS fluid generates quite a bit of heat, even with the cooler working properly.
Well since the part has to be order (if it's needed) I'm going to take it apart this weekend and see exactly what the problem is. If it is the tube, I'll try and patch it enough to get me going till I can order the part from Chris May (around $25) and get it shipped here.
I just replaced my pump after it blew up. But my new one developed a leak after ony a few miles. I found it leaking at the pressed in tube of the pump. This is the return line.
Well I think I've got it fixed. After removing the alt. and a pully that the belt rides on so I could see, I found that the lower clamp on the side where the pipe from the reservoir meets the pipe to the power steering pump was MIA. How long it's been gone is anyones guess? It didn't just come loose as is wasn't hanging at the bottom or anything, it was gone completely. I put a new clamp on, cleaned up the pipe to make it easier to tell if it started leaking again, jacked the car up to get the resistance off the tires and turned the wheels to get the air out of the system. Then I replaced the fluid again. Repeated trying to get all the air out. Set it back down on the ground and all seems to be working fine.
Actually with the Primary fan motor , the oil pump gear on the cam, the A/C blower motor, the brake booster, the (less than 1 year old) opti, then this, I've had to deal with something practically every month since Feb. I'm about ready for a month off. :yesnod:
