Guys I know this has been covered a thousand times and I read through all the archive threads.
Here is my deal
Since I took ownership of the car a year ago from day one the brake pedal was very hard. The car would brake but not to a full lock of the wheels. When I would take it out I would make sure I had plenty of space between the cars in front.
The brake pedal was always hard. I tried bleeding the brakes and still the same, I even checked the pads and they were good.
Two days ago when I went to brake the pedal went in all the way and the car did not brake, I pumped it twice and then it caught on. It did it a few times, as the pedal became very soft and I would have to pump it a few times before it would get hard again.
I just ordered a new Power Booster and its on its way but reading through the archives, some people had the same problem or similar and were told to change the MC instead.
With what is happening to me is it a MC or Power Booster problem? I do not want to give out $145 for a new booster and still have to get a MC.
you have described two different problems with two solutions. the hard braking would be a power booster problem and the to the floor and pumping would mean a master cyl problem or a leak eslewhere in the system.
When my BB went on my 89 the diaphragm within the BB broke. Being that the booster uses a vacuum from the motor the car ran like a bag of sh**. So if the car was running ok I would lean towards MC, but the hard pedal could have been a small leak in the BB. Buy the BB at your local Autozone or similar, mine was only $89 and it came with a LT warranty. Replaced it twice since I bought the first. Good Luck!!
Just wanted to let you all know I changed it last week. I was not that difficult except for maybe that nut on behind the steering colum.
I love my car but since I got it, it had a hard brake pedal like I mentioned before. But WOW,, that is all I could say. It drives so great now, when I brake the pedal is so smooth that I can't believe I am in the vette. It actually breaks better than my wifes 2002 Rodeo. Thanks All
oHHHHHHH the nuts on the steering column. I am 6'3 and 250 lbs....just imagine what i looked like upside down, backwards and feet out the targa...lol....thank goodness it wasn't defective...I would have torched autozone.....

LOL
Feet up on in the air with my 185 lbs just showing the world that I could sexy if I wanted to.
Yeah, sounds like two different problems, all right.
Couple things:
1) I've found that the el-cheapo boosters only last one year (did this twice). Get a GM one - costs 2x as much, but it will pay.
2) Put some shiny aluminized heat tape on the underside to help reflect the heat from the headers.
 -Bill
Well I got el-cheapo one so I guess I see myself up in the air again
My87: No problem - the second time will be much easier! My first el-cheapo lasted almost exactly a year, and it also happened to have a one year warranty. So they gave me the second one free. When the second one failed exactly one year later, I didn't even bother to ask for a third freeby. That's when I ordered a brand new GM one (about three years ago).
Maybe if you get some heat tape on the underside of the booster housing - that should help.
Good luck, hope it will be better than the luck that I had!
