Pwr Steering Pump Fluid - 1985
Am installing a new power steering pump and noticed some pre-lube coming from inside the pump as the common "red stuff" (I guess the same as the auto tranny fluid). I always thought our cars used the "clear" fluid thats proprietary GM power steering fluid. What do you use? TIA

 I use AMZOIL synthetic auto tranny fluid in all my power steering pumps. it stands up great to the heat and solved my morning sickness problems on my 88 :seeya

Did you use the old "turkey baster" method of changing the fluid?

:D Is there any other way? Drain it, refill it, start the engine and turn the wheel a few times, then drain and refill again

I'm using the same, and have trouble keeping it cool, it boils during hard driving.
But, I have Z51 and no power steering cooler..

:D Power steering cooler is a cheap mod, it is nothing more than a piece of metal tubing in the return line running back and forth across the front of the frame.

That's what's in mine now. The service bay flushed and filled it with it after they installed my new rack pipe a couple of months ago.
I mentioned the Valvoline SynTec as a cheaper, quality alternative.

I have the FX-3 with the PS cooler so mine stays within temp paramaters.
