Are all '84's dogs??
I have a dealer selling a 84 for $7k. It sounds like its in decent shape, I have not seen it yet. Are all the 84's Crossfires, and are they as bad as I have heard?

All 1984 Corvettes ('82's also) were Crossfires. What is a dog? Not too many run 12's off the showroom floor. I love mine.
What have you heard??? Good luck, and...
RACE ON!!!

Re: Are all '84's dogs?? (CFI-EFI)
I just basically heard that the crossfires had a LOT of issues and were generally best to be avoided.
I will probably check it out tomorrow just to see it. I am thinking I might be able to haggle the price a little too.

I have a 84, true they may be at the bottom of the Corvette performance chain, but with a little effort, research and luck, you can make that CF stroll down the track pretty fast. Take me for instant, I have a contact who builds racing motors only who said he could burn me a chip after I build my motor, upwards of 300hp is not out of the question for a CF. You could also upgrade the ECM and that will also open the door for your mods. Dogs??? I don't think so, maybe a puppy, but all puppies grow up.. ;)

I also have always heard the crossfire is a big crapper. I can tell you this about some 84's This year is said to be the best handling year for the vette the springs in the 84 were stiffer than any year. At the cost of very rough ride also. GM changed the springs to a softer less stiff spring near the end of production in 84.

7K is high for an 84 especially if it has any miles on it. The crossfires are the least powerful of the c4's and the intake is even more restrictive than a TPI car. If it were my money, I'd be looking for a later model you can find '85-'89 vettes for 7k, sometimes even newer.

Cruise-In I Veteran
Re: Are all '84's dogs?? (F5Nikon)
I've got one and I LOVE IT !!!!
It hasn't had any "issues" in the four years I've been driving it other than the normal stuff EVERY vehicle needs..... tires, battery, brakes, ocasional stop/turn signal bulb, spark plugs, etc and a lot of TLC that any Vette should get.
(I've had mine painted, new interior, new this, new that,on and on but I don't intend to sell it)
Mine pulls hard, runs great and has been reliable as your best friend.
It DRIVES way, way, way better than my 91 Vette. Ok, IMHO, it DRIVES better than my Z06. Doesn't pull as hard. Just DRIVES better.
The steering is quicker than the 91 or the Z06. The suspension is stiffer than the 91 AND the Z06 TOGETHER.... but this car drives like it's on rails. Handles like a big go kart. It is SOOOOo much fun to drive.
Don't get me wrong...the 84's are S-T-I-F-F !!! All caps!!!
If you want a soft ride, don't get one. If you want a Vette that rides and drives like a track car, the 84 is probably for you.
It could use an additional 50 hp but again it's no 'puppy'.
I can burn the tires off if I want to. It does nice burnouts. It cruises at 130 mph all day with no strain and doesn't take long to get to triple digit speeds.
Hope this helps.

Re: Are all '84's dogs?? (F5Nikon)
The '84 was a very fast car for the time it came out. Unless I'm mistaken, it was the first production American car that could top 150MPH from the factory. (If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me). Its the first year of the C4 style and the 2nd and last year of the Crossfire fuel injection system. Now to compare the acceleration of a stock '84 to a '01 Camaro Z28 would be somewhat pointless as the Camaro would probably win. However, its still a Camaro and not a Corvette. You've got to consider what you want, a really fast car that going to be reliable or a nice Corvette that's still fairly quick and fun to drive? I'd go with the Corvette myself. just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Are all '84's dogs?? (Thanatos69)
The 84 topped out @ 140 mph stock. I like mine a lot. For a car born in some of the hardest smog times, it has some go in it. With flowmasters and a gutted cat, I run a 14.6. Thats not bad. And it does ride on rails. I swear it has no body sway. A lot of people don't have a lot of respect for the 84, mechanics, corvette shops, etc. Just drive it and see what YOU think. Don't listen to some guy who disrespects the C4 because he's worked on a 63 split window, and a 03 Z06. Its a good car for the money. Try and haggle the dealer. I think you'll be happy. On the other hand, try and shoot for an 86 or up. The TPI has a lot more aftermarket parts for when you want to go faster. Late!

guy out of Canada has a 9 sec 84 Vette, not stock of course, but just goes to show if you want to spend the money you can make them run.

The 84 was unlike any other first model year for a new generation Vette. It was a clean sheet of paper. The car was like nothing else on the road when it first came out. The only American production car to have over 200hp, a 7speed manual, race car suspension, digital instruments. 84 Z-51's were capable of 1g on the skid pad.
IMO, as the 84 gets closer to 20 years old, more people will admire what a depature it was from anything else that was out there. As for making the motor run, its possible to have a low 14's car and be very close to stock. The difference is you don't have a source for aftermarket parts. The 84 is very much a DIY car.
I've had mine for almost 20 years and I enjoy it more now than when it was new. Having about 340hp really matches the capabilities of the chassis.
Enjoy!

Re: Are all '84's dogs?? (F5Nikon)
The crossfire was GMs first attempt at efi in the Corvettes. Although less than stellar performance by later model standards the Crossfire is very reliable. Seven year later the stock performance was up only 40 hp.
My ported crossfire on top of a stock '90 L98 long block ran 14.07 @97 (altitude corrected to msl) in 90 + temperatures.
There are a lot of Corvettes between 84 and 91 selling for under $10,000. Look for the best one for the money. If that happens to be an 84 I wouldn't be scared of it.
Happy hunting

Re: Are all '84's dogs?? (F5Nikon)
Sounds to me like it would be a good way to get a nice vette fairly cheap and have something to work on. While I don't have that much experience with these cars (yet) I truly love that TPI. I realize the LT 1/LT4 has a better top end & might be better as a "race car" but imho the TPI is great on the street where you use that mid range and might not build it to the max. Personally, I would put a TPI on the 84. Sounds like the handling is very nice.
OMG it has started, somebody said "welcome to the obsession" I've had mine 6 months, it's not finished, and I want an 84 to build. aaaaacccckkk
