gutted my precats today
I am running a stock exhaust system with targa mufflers on my 87, I wanted a little more rumble, so I gutted the two precats. I have no idea if it made the car faster or slower, but it does sound a little meaner now. :thumbs:

Drop the front Y pipe,Three nuts on each manifold,O2 sensor plug,two nuts at 3rd cat(resonator) . I had my pipe cut right after the front two cats and took a hammer and a pipe and went to town on the insides then dumped out the junk. I also did the big unit (third cat) on my 90 Recently figured I might as well since I was down there.I als had a horrible sound coming from the front ones. Very Easy to do ,I needed no special tools and it took me about two hours .

Hmm..since we're talking about 87's here...My 87 had a decent tone 100% stock...Then I cut the mufflers off and welded in tips, and it had a better tone...then I swapped to a 2½" PreCatless Front Y-pipe ($175 from Mid-America), as well as a 3" In/Out Random Tech High Flow Cat...that gave it a REAL nice rumble. (Still want more though, so I'm gonna replace the cat with a 3" In/Out Borla Race Muffler and change out the rear y-pipe to a larger one.)
