Prototype C4 A.I.R. Pump completed :)

I had it totally gutted by an engineer; (J.O.H. Engineering in Ipswich, QLD, Australia; phone 07 3282 2194 - Tell John I sent you!)
It uses the original housing (AND the original bracket which I like, that I've polished) and now has two 3/4" aluminium discs, Mig welded inside with a one peice solid steel shaft (17mm thick) running all the way which has been milled and turned to accomodate BIG sealed bearings that support BOTH ends! (part # 6203 RSR)
AT LAST! The pictures as promised
It is now a large freewheeling pulley without any drum etc inside, which was the better option given that the original bearing surfaces were shot.
:hurray:
* UPDATE* As of today I've now done 600miles on the new pump; NO troubles!!

and to get one from a US based corvette supplier landed here in OZ would cost at least 4 times what this operation cost me.
PLUS; there are two bearings supporting the load on the pulley, not just one...long life is the goal.
Thanks for your response :yesnod:
I can understand trying to make your own then..
I am still wondering though about your design in using dual bearings and the original housing. The Breathless design and others using the same principal setup are being raced hard on cars and on daily drivers without a hitch for years. I am sure a local machine shop could make it for you for less than $100.
Don't get me wrong, I like the fact you are making it yourself and all, not saying nothing bad, but sometimes, the simpler design is the one to stick with.

It's on the car AND WORKING FINE!!!
Had another thought too; another 'advantage' for U.S.A. guys, is that it would pass a visual inspection if you kept all the hoses etc in place.
We don't (I think) have (Well, I've never encountered it anyway) that sort of visual inspections here in Australia, but even if we did; Vettes are so rare that I doubt there'd be many cops here that would know what they were looking for! (Even tho I did buy this one off a cop!); NICE FELLA he is too, if you're reading this mate! :D

really? must not have looked in the rite place?
what did this engineer cost ?
what time did you spend with conversion?
how much were the parts?
over all did you really save any money?
was it worth all your effort?
some of these things may not concern everyone..however good luck ..:D

OK answers to your questions;
what did this engineer cost ? $120 all up incl parts
what time did you spend with conversion? The time taken to take the unit to engineers then pick it up. Don't know how long they took, being a prototype and all, but aside from thinking time, I guess just the time their experianced hands took to machine the bits.
how much were the parts? Not separately listed; most would have been labour aside from 2 bearing and some alloy etc, so I'm guessing $30-$40 max
over all did you really save any money?
Yes; was cheaper than a rebuild which couldn't have been done as is on mine due to bearing surfaces wear; would have had to be re-surfaced etc
was it worth all your effort? YES; The most effort was deciding to go ahead and not have an air pump anymore.
I'm pleased with the outcome.

I took it apart and knocked the fiberboard blades and crap out of it.It then freewheeled internally. As long as the bearings are good,it will last a long time. What led me to gut the pump was that it was making a loud noise inside. When I took the cover off it,one of the fiberboard blades or whatever that stuff is,had broken up in there. So I just finished it off.I just used a hammer and chisel/screwdriver and smacked it all out piece by piece.
:)

I'll try and email you 2 pics of the 'pump'; these idiots running my ISP STILL almost a week later haven't fixed their FTP site!!
For the rest of you guys; be patient; I'll upload pics as SOON as they get their act together.
Thanks!
