Default Eprom Burning Question

I have finally started making my own chips for tuning my car.
I am using a 'Willem.org' EPROM burner board, which seems to be workign great. I already burned /erased / tested some 27c256 eproms successfully.
Unfortunately my ECM ('85 vette) uses the smaller 2732A 4K eproms, and I have no luck burning these. I am thinking maybe I can't erase these using the willem programmer (works with the 27c256 fine though).
Anyone have experience with this?

ALso does anyone have a detailed explanation FAQ on tunercat's Tables? Some of it I just can't figure out.

What tables did you have in mind? Your programer may not support that style chip. Example the new the programmer that lets you program as you drive doesn't support/didn't at the time the 29C256 chips which are the the ones I use. THey are a flash chip.

First of all does your little prom programmer support the 2732A chips? It should has that particular number is a very old style prom and has been around for 20 years!

The next thing is that the 2732A proms are erased by using a UV eraser. I cannot be erased electrically by an prom programmer and as of today there are no EEPROM replacements that I know of for the 2732A.

So if you want to use and program the 2732A you must buy a UV eraser to erase the proms with, it takes about 10 minutes depending on the power of the UV eraser. Then you can program the chips with your BIN file once it is erased.

Hi there,

Thanks for everyone's responses.
The prigrammer does support the 2732/a eproms, and I have tested writing to 27256 eproms.

Odd thing is I can't even seem to read the 2732a eprom.
I'm using a ZIF socket where you put the EPROM in, and it has room for 32 pins, and the 2732a eprom from the car has only 24. I tried it in all possible positions and I don't get the data from it.

Using the 27256 eprom I put it in the top of the ZIF socket (Leaves 4 open spots from the hold-down-arm -> up), and can read and write the eprom fine.
I try the same with the 2732 eprom and I get either all 84's , E7, or 00.
The chip is good, I just tried using it in my vette and she drives fine. This was the original chip that came with the car.

Dammit I figured it out.

The VPp needs to be 21v to burn the older 2732 eproms and Im only using 12v. I need to do some mod to the board I've read.

Dammit.. Why can't my ecm use 27256 eproms!! :mad
POS '870 ecm..(But I don't want to hack up my wiring by switching to a new one)

No hacking, just repinning. It'll look just like it belongs there. I'd want a newer ECM anyways so that you can get some real data for tuning from it instead of the slooooooow baudrate the '870 offers.

I have also used 27C32 proms as the 2732* are becoming harder and harder to get. Also some of the older chips were 12v and some are 21v, and if someone or maybe even GM had programmed a 12v 2732A at 21v volts chances are it was a one time program for that chip. You can erase it in a UV programmer but chances are you won't be able to program it again.

Another weird thing is that sometimes when a 12v prom won't program I have programmed it at 21v but like I said once you do that chances are it won't take another programming cycle. I have lots of 2732 chips here and some 27C32 I think. If you need some let me know.

I think I'll just upgrade to a '165 ecm and use the 27c256 eproms.
Doesn't seem to be such a tuff job the way I'm looking at the schematics.

No its actually a relatively easy swap. There are plenty of websites that has done this swap so there is lots of documentation on the subject. Good luck in your project. One good thing about this swap is that you will be getting a ECM that has a buad rate more than double the speed of the old door stop that is in the car now.
