Need to gut pre-cats, apparently getting so hot it has melted the plastic wire cover on battery calbe to starter and blistered the paint on the oil filter. No muffler shops open today. What is the best way to get it done.
Re: Need quick tutorial - pre-cat gutting (Corvette0096)
take it off of the car... get a long pointy pipe or rod (would take a pretty long screwdriver)... and just start beating on it and dunping the junk out... repeat til empty. not super easy to do, that ceramic honeycomb or whatever it is is pretty tough stuff.
Re: Need quick tutorial - pre-cat gutting (SonnyinVA)
These responses seem to be for a cat and not pre cats.
I was thinking the same for mine. When i took a look it seems there is a bend before and after pre cat.
Any thoughts ??

Yep - I had the same thoughts - So - - - - I drill a hole in the bends (about 1/2") roughly centered on the down pipe. Took a long drill bit and drilled the s##t out of it. I occasionally banged the end on a piece of wood to get the stuff out. When I could not feel any more resistance inside the pumpkin, blew it out with an airhose. Then welded the holes. Had my son-inlaw help, especially holding up the "Y" pipe so I had a better shot with the drill. Also replaced the O2 sensor. Got it back on and it seemed better. I have not taken her for a run yet, but it is slightly louder through the Flowmasters. Main cat has been ordered.
Good Luck
Re: Need quick tutorial - pre-cat gutting (subman)
I just gutted my main and removed my pre cats. It is a wee bit louder and it moves a bit quicker now. not as good as the long tube headers and true dual with no cats I was running, but much better.
My pre cats fell apart, and the drivers side formed a ceramic ball inside, more like a one way valve, and the exhuast out was the closed possition.
All fixed up now.
