What is supposed to work in the "accessory" position of the ignition key - you know - the first click before the dash lights up.?
Or, more specifically , is the radio supposed to work in this position. Mine doesn't, and whats more the fuse saying "RADIO" doesn't want to play in this position either.
How can I sit in the car with the engine off and listen to the radio?
I can't be sure about an '89, but forever, GM has used this system: In the normal off and parked position, called "locked" the steering wheel is locked, all power off. The next position, rotating the top of the key away from you. is "unlocked", it is still off, but the steering is unlocked. The next click forward is "run". After that is, "start". From the "off and locked" position, one click backward, top of key toward you, is "accessory". Play your radio in the acc position. A Corvette AND a first car. Good luck with your battery, and...

RACE ON!!!
CFI-EFI, I Dont know what to say. I have had this car for a couple of years and a C3 for a few years before that and I never thought to turn the key backwards!!
Thanks friend.
PS what do you mean " Corvette AND a first car"? ( Sorry Prob'ly me a bit thick)
Thanks again. Wish I had asked this BEFORE I took the dash to bits :D :D :cry
I just read his profile. He's 53 years old. Every GM car with a column mounted switch (about 35 years worth) ever built has been this way. Most other cars, too. Either he's just traded in his '54 Buick with the accelerator actuated starter switch, or we've been HAD!!!

Or maybe he lives in England and his Vette is his first US designed/built GM car?
Just a thought, but maybe we should be extra nice to people that have to pay VAT, they have enough pain in their lives already :jester
Lets try again - The key is supposed to turn "backwards" for the accesory position - is that right? Mine doesn't seem to and I am loath to force it in case I break something.
Here in the UK, US cars are as rare as rocking horse poopie, and stuff that may seem to you to be obvious, is not necessarily so to us
(We did design the C4 chassis and the ZR1 engine though)

Re: Electrictrickery question (britvette)
The ignition on my 89 does not turn backwards either. Never really tried to figure out why. Guess I should read the manual, just never was sufficiently motivated for this issue!
Hey John, You sound like a  dude. Wish I could get another tour of duty in England. I loved Fairford.
Does your key assembly require a small push in and then a counter clockwise turn (as you look at it from the passenger seat)? If you want, we could probably get you an owners manual or at least get a scanned copy of that page for you.
John,
If you aren't extracting the urine, then you need to push the key inward toward the column and then turn backwards as was earlier stated. From the OFF position, just push in and turn backwards and you're in Accessory position.
BTW: Looks like I've got a job back at Menwith Hill, so will be returning to Yorkshire. Maybe we can get together sometime.
Yo, yeah soz, forgot to say about pushing the whole key / lock thing in b4 u turn it back - its only a small amount.
I prolly payed over the odds for my handbook in a rush to get it - cos i couldn`t wait to get the roof off and didint know how lol - and that was b4 i found this forum.
I`m sure most of the corvette places here in the UK can get one for u - but why not try somewhere like American Auto Mags first - or look in the back of Classic american for places advertising handbooks / manuals etc.
Or if ur in no rush - u`ll prolly get one cheap from the book / trade stands at a classic car show - got one for my Fiero for a fiver.
Hope u managed to get ur radio to work without the ignition on now.
Thanks friends. My ignition switch is all loose and wobbly as it is, and it looks like a real PITA to extract and renovate, thats why I am being a bit careful here. Anyway I went out for a drive yesterday, and found the wipers don't work, and the passenger window doesn't either, so least of my problems.
Ah.... the joys of motoring......
Ray, yes, maybe we can "hook up" as I think you colonials say :D
Now heres an idea, - we could get together, and drink some warm beer!!! :D
Oh the poor tragic things, they will never understand :blueangel:
BTW I was joking about the Buick - my Range Rover has a Buick derived V8 in it.
One more supplimentary question What is that big round thing in front of the driver's seat, and what are those pedals on the floor for?
Nah - only kidding :)
Seriously though thanks for the info everybody, one of those things that is ridiculously simple if you know, but I didn't In all the cars I have ever run, (mainly Jaguars) the first clockwise position is acc, followed by run and start.
Now I need just one more piece of information and I will know everything about everything. And my car needs just one more mod, . . . . and I'll have just one more beer . . . . .and just one more. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Total Recall,
yeah, I saw my car for about 5 secs too, three days shooting and it all ended up on the cutting room floor! I think the car was not really what they wanted, - did you hear the line where Lesley Dunlop says "and he drives about in that great big flash American car" (or something similar), they really wanted a lot of chrome and fins that they could laugh at, and were a bit disappointed when it looks quite nice and desirable. Dont mind though - they paid me £550 for the privilege!
