I noticed that my L98 (see sig) pings under hard acceleration but only after it has been driven for a long while and heat soaked. Coolant temps when this occurs are around 200-206 which is not that hot. It is most noticeable when it shifts into 2nd gear after a WOT 1st gear blast.
What confuses me is that if I only drive it for maybe 30 minutes or so it will not ping even though the coolant temp is the same as it was when it pinged after a long ride.
I only run 93 premium fuel.

Check your pcv setup, your passenger side TB to Valvecover hose, to see if it has a lot of oil in it, and the EGR setup on your car (although this will set a code almost always when bad). Could be u're getting bad gas too..
Also how hot is it outside? I usually can run 6-8 BTDC timing on my car, but with the 80-90egree heat and high humidity I get ping at wot on top of 2nd and in3rd aswell, so I had to lower my timing to 4degrees for the summer.

MrNuke - I'll take a look at the pcv. I am not getting any check engine light. My timing was at 6* last time I checked.
Well the outside temp Saturday was around 87 or so coming off the highway from Carlisle. I stopped for gas and when I left the station I accelerated full blast and when it shifted to 2nd it was pinging pretty bad, but it did not do it in 1st gear. I looked at the coolant temp, read something like 202-205.
So yesterday I took a ride to the store, had it running for 15-20 minutes with similar coolant readings as the previous day. I ran it pretty hard and did not hear any pinging. So thats where I am right now. I drove to work today which is about a 45 minute ride but did not get a chance to test it due to traffic.
