Default Found 1985 Hood Struts for $16

My 85 hood struts gave/give NO assist when opening the hood.

Went to Autozone and found them for $16.99 each, but they had to be ordered, the last time I remembered looking up a price I thought they were @ $90 each.

They came in to today so I'll install them tonight. :smash:

Great find, I priced them from GM too and remember them being really expensive. A lot of their parts seem to be ridiculously marked up, I priced some side yokes for my Dana 44 from GM they were over $300 each, yesterday a local shop charged me $170 each and they are Spicer, same as OEM. Makes you wonder where all the extra markup goes...

I will go pick them up in a couple of hours and post the model #'s and manufacturers name.

My struts are located down by the hinges, one on each side.

OK part # 95056 made by Mighty Lift bought at Autozone, $16.99 each

They are gas charged lift supports.

I just put them on its a 15 minute job.

It helped reduce the lift weight @ 25-30% until you get the hood up to 45 degrees then its effortless.

To get the hood to come back down you have to pull it back down just a little.

The orignal shocks I could compress by hand, the new ones woud not compress at all unless I used the vise etc.

So it was well worth it for me! It does not open on its own but the 85's never did as far as I know.

Yeah the angle of he hood closed is too much for the hood lifts to overcome, but if we upgraded to the gas lift support like the later years I could see it being a lot easier.

Nonetheless, it is a big improvement.

Could someone post a pic of these things? I am blown away...I didn't even know they were supposed to be there. I can't see a mounting where they were removed. Maybe I need mounts too?

I checked out larrys hood with the new supports a few hours ago and have to say its a big impovement (mine are shot).
redvette1986, they are located right next to the hood hinges (inboard of the headlights) they look like small shock absorbers about 6 inches long.

have you thought about replacing the larger strut as well?
does autozone carry these (large stut)?

Yeah RJ has an 86 and they appear to be the same.

Also I may now go to the other strut type hood strut becasue now it may lift the hood up even easier.

The new hood struts allow the hood to be lifted with your thumb from the 45 degree angle up to the top of the pivot.

Someone on the forum said in posts a couple of weeks ago that their hood goes up almost on its own,,,, that is what I would like or close to it.

Thanks for the part #'s. I found the struts at autoparts.com for 14.81 each. Same info as autozone only less expensive!!!!

2- 95056 RNB ; [Lift Support] Mighty Lift; Gas Charged; Hood $14.81each $29.63 Total

UPDATE!!!!! Received notice from Autoparts.com that the struts are NOT available. Since there are no close autozones, I went to NAPA. $18.89 and received same day  . Took 15 minutes to install and well worth it.
