I'm having a problem starting my 1987 Vette with 36000 miles. This is intermittent, but sometimes when I go to start the car it trys to start, almost catches, but it won't actually start. It acts exactly like the car is flooded. When I am having the problem, I have to hold the gas pedal down half way and when or if the car starts, I have to let the car run at high RPM for 2 seconds to clean itself out and then the car runs perfectly. It can sometimes take 5 - 10 times to get the car to start when I am having this problem.
When I was down in Bowling Green when this problem was preventing me from getting the car started, I took it to Tech Tune to troubleshoot this. They unplugged my Cold Start Injector and this appeared to immediately resolve the problem. The car ran perfect after that for 2 months and now with the injector still unplugged, the problem is back. He also ran an emissions test on the car and it passed with CA standards (which I think would rule out a leaking injector).
The thing about this problem is that when it happens, the car can be cold or it can be warm. Sometimes I have it after filling up a tank of gas. After I hold the pedal down for 2 seconds to clean the engine out, it runs perfect. Idles like new.
It's possible that you have the original injectors that weren't replaced under a tech bulletin and they are leaking causing hard starts. Put a fuel pressure gauge on the shrader valve on the fuel injection rear and turn on the ignition for 2+ seconds and turn it off. See how long the fuel pressure holds up. GM says you should not lose 1 psi in 30 minutes or you have leaky injectors.
