Well since the start of FL's crappy summer, I've been haunted by rain water leaking into my car... in the feet area and in the hatch. Well, after hrs and hrs of frustration and being so pissed off you wouldn't imagine.... It doesn't leak!!! For the front leaks... the windshield had to be replaced b/c of a nick, so i watch the guys do it...and did i learn a lot... Holy moly. I put all the windshield trim back myself when i got home and used blk RTV between all the metal trim.... Worked. NO leaks in the front! I guess the water was getting behind the A pillar seal or track holder/trim. Now for the hatch filling up with water this is pretty odd. Instead of "buying" the MAD hatch drain kit, i just drilled the holes as if i was doing the kit. drained the water great...and into my hatch. so i just plugged them with RTV. No leaks. SO, now i have a vette that i can leave out in the rain for as long as i wish... and it won't leak inside.... Thank god this crap is over. But i did learn a lot about weather striping and trim molding etc. If anyone of you other guys have water leaks... 99% I know the cure:)
Send some of that rain here !!
We haven't seen any rain for 3 months. There are over 800 forest fires around here. Two weeks 250 highend houses went up in smoke across the lake from us.
I finally got brave enough to drill the holes for the MAD drain kit last year, and after the first one I wasn't too happy with the way things were working out, so I stopped. Well, like you said, the water drained down the hole, but in a heavy storm, or if you let the hose run on that area while washing it, it drained right down behind the driver's seat onto the floor board under the carpet and made a big soggy mess. Evidently, there is only about 1" of space in which the drill bit must pass through; too far in either direction and water will not drain into the fender well.
I put electrical tape over the hole and that fixed the problem. I'll probably go with the RTV soon, though.
Re: Doesn't leak water anymore!!! (Southern Comfort)
The tube doesn't work that well in the first place. Unless you can get the tube right in the corner, there will always be some water that won't drain. After chewing up my fiberglass trying to drill the larger hole, I decided to give up on the whole process.
Just for sh*&s and giggles, would it work if you drill the holes in the corners, countersink just a tad, connect 1/4" tubing ($2 for 25 feet of clear at Lowes) to a large rivet with the shaft removed. Hold this in the newly drilled hole with the RTV. At 2 in the morning, I don't see how that could do much harm, but that could be the sleep deprivation talking. Just a thought, good luck.
I'm not messing with it period. I sealed all the holes and yesterday it rained really really hard for a few hrs and left it ou in the driveway. Not a drip. so i'm not touching it.:)
This would be a lot easier to Physically show you. I'll try to type it out.
No need to remove the trim. Use black RTV. get 2 tubes just to be safe. Have a nice small flat head screw driver and lots of paper towels handy. 1st thing you want to seal up is.... the inside of the windshield trim. If you run your hand across the surface (outside) of the windshield and go to the edges your going to run into the 1st trim that goes around the windshield. you need to seal all the way around on that. top, and L and R sides. Then, clean it up nicely and trim it when it's dry for a nice finish look. Next, put a seal down the A pillars in the "valley" part. This is very hard to try to explain. I think it'd be easier to take pictures and email them to you, but anyway. Put a bead from the top corners all the way down the valley and then even to the A pillar Seal edges by the door seal. You'll have no leaks. DONE. You can try to remove the trim and put the RTV behind the trim, like i did, it helps, but it's not 100% chance of fixing it. so on mine i have rtv behind the trim and around the outside like i just explained. I'd just do it on the outside, easier and 100% fix. Also make sure the A pillar seal is "locked" in the channel like it should be. use a small flat head to go around and check it. If you have any questions or are not sure where to put the RTV, email me at Fast_vette89@yahoo.com and i'll snap a couple of pics and send them to you.
