I had my frisbee removed last year since it is one of those free mods (wasn't actually free since I paid someone to do it LOL). Since then, I've noticed rattling up front when the car idles rough or when I shut it down. For the longest time, I thought it was my ZF tranny that needed service. Looking at it closer though, I believe it has nothing to do with the tranny. Instead, the sound is coming from up front...probably where the frisbee used to be. Everything looks tight and secure, but I still hear the rattle only before the computer sends the car into closed loop and when I shut it off. Can this be adjusted or am I looking at having to have this frisbee re-installed to stop the noise?
When you remove the frisbee and you put the bolts back in, they wont snug up properly because they are too long. What you have to do is put some washers on there to take up the space where the frisbee was. If your man didn't put any washers in there, the pulley will be loose.
Well, I don't mean to be repetitive, but it's just hard to pinpoint exactly what it is. I don't have any vibration, so to speak. It occurs with or without the A/C being used. I only notice the rattling sound when I first start the car up. For whatever reason, my car, when starting cold, idles somewhat rough for about a minute until the computer takes over. Then it smooths out and purrs nicely. This is the most noticeable time that I hear rattling. The other time is right when I shut the car off, it rattles when the engine is cut. As for the guy who removed the frisbee, it seems to stick in my head that he did put some kind of spacer in place. If that's the case, I could almost rule that out. He thought it had to do with the tranny saying that the ZF's were notorious for making noises. I need to get my tranny serviced anyways, so I wonder if that might help.
I had a similar rattle, turned out to be the belt tensioner, bad bearing. I used an old trick my friends dad taught me it find the source of a rattle or tick. Take a baseball bat, breaker bar or similar long solid tube. Place one end on the suspected source and the other up to your ear. You'll be able to hear if it's that point that's ticking.
I checked all the pumps, ac, smog, water and the ticking was clearly from the tensioner.
Works good for ticking valves. you can see which one it is while the car is running with the covers on.
BE CAREFUL if you do it. Make sure you have plenty of clearance between the
stick, your head and the moving parts of the motor.
