I recently bought a '92 Red/Red Coupe w/ 48,000 on the clock. The ABS and ARS service lights come on for a while and when I turn off the car and start it again they don't come on again for about 100 miles. I assume this something a dealer or professional mechanic need to look at. What is involved? Before I take it in I'd like some backfill. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
You might can save yourself a lot of money and check the brake fluid and the pads. As the pads wear the fluid level in the master cylinder goes down. When it gets below a certain point it will set that code to let you know the fluid level is low.
The lights might come on if you get on the brakes for an extended period, such as an off ramp or if you get on them hard for a short period.
The quick solution is to add more brake fluid. The underlying problem though is that your pads are probably worn pretty bad. If you add more fluid and then change the pads you will risk overflowing the master cylinder. Add some fluid for now and see if that corrects your problem. If it does you'll need to change the pads, just be sure and remove some fluid first.
