Ive heard....prolly from this forum about the LT1 trans am being tuned down to keep the vette top dog. I was wondering how they tune it down. Any ideas?
In reality they don't. GM likes to under rate the F-body to make the Vette look better. I've seen F-bodies dyno as much as a vette on many occasions. The only real tuning down they do is in the exhaust. F-bodies have single exhaust and a less direct intake path. This may account for some difference in a 100% stock vs stock comparison. Throw a cold air induction and a good cat-back exhaust and it'll make what a vette does.
As such a lot of the "bolt ons" that f-body guys rave about don't do as much for the vette. The cold air induction is probably the best example of that. None of the vette systems really do much on a stock motor.
They have dual exhaust tips but I've never seen an F-body that has two pipes running from the manifolds. They all hit a y-pipe and run as a single pipe over the rear axle into a special cross flow muffler.
BTW, even all the aftermarket cat back kits are single exhaust kits. There is simply no room to run dual pipes effectively. I've seen it done but it usually results in giving up a LOT of ground clearance. You CAN run 2 pipes, one above the other beside the driveshaft but it's kina a PITA.

:withstupid: I had a '97 Trans Am, I couldn't find a shop in all of Austin,Tx that could tell me anything other than there's not enough room for duals, unless someone custom fabricates one and you give up ground clearance.
Back to the original post though... I'd say LT1 TransAms/Z28s do have SOMEthing holding them back, all though I don't think it's exhaust, I'm just not sure, but then again, my bone stock (cept a powerstat) 97 ran a 14.1 @ 98 mph with around 60k on the odometer, my vette, all though with double the mileage only put up a 14.4 @ 96 mph............ over all though, I'd say the vette's just have the upper hand in aerodynamics and weight, plus MAYBE little more power. My Trans Am weighed 3700 lbs without me in it, SUPPOSEDLY, meanwhile the vette weighs what? 3300?
