My starter is on the brink. I turn the key 4/5 times before the car starts. Your normal clicking noise. I have not even looked at it yet, I will when I get home from work today. Is the solenoid mounted on the starter? Also what is must likely to go, the solenoid or the stater itself.
I had the same issue on my '94. I ended up replacing the entire starter assembly (the solenoid is on it), but I'm not sure of the '84. I'd probably think starter over solenoid as the clicking is the solenoid engaging I believe. Due to the placement of the starter it absorbs a great deal of heat and after a while (years normally) it will start to heatlock.
If you decide it's your starter, replace starter and solenoid together. We did on my buddy's '84. He bought them together, assembled. Wasn't much. And we put a heat shield blanket on the puppy. It wasn't hard on a lift. :D
First, remove your battery cables (neg first) and clean the cable lugs and battery posts and replace the cables (neg last). Starter motors draw 100+ amps and this requires an excellent battery connection. Next, measure the battery terminal voltage when cranking, the voltage must not fall below 9.0 volts or the battery is discharged, cables don't have good connection, or the battery is at the end of its life. Check the negative connection to the frame and the connection of the wire from the frame to the left end of the block. Check the connection for cleanliness and tightness on the starter. If all of this checks out, your starter solenoid contacts are burned and not making good connection and a new starter solenoid is indicated, or replace the entire starter.
