I'm not sure when it was changed last, maybe when my mechanic switched out motors last year?!?
So, I had my one mechanic take a peek at it to see if it needed changing. He checked the side, no leaks which was good.
He took off the fill plug and said the volume was correct, and then stuck the tip of his finger in it. He pulled it out and it was very clear, so he said it was perfect.
Even if it looks clear, does that mean it's still fine?
The experts at ZR51 Performance say to change the ZF tranny fluid every 10-12k miles. http://www.zfdoc.com/faq.htm I agree, these transmissions are expensive to rebuild. :steering:
I recommend using Castrol TWS 10-60 - its the BMW recommended fill. I have it in my ZF right now. Good stuff - however, you can ONLY get it at a local BMW dealer.
I did it this spring at 25k with the stock GM oil. Didn't make much of a difference.
Next time I'm going to do it with the BMW oil.
Take the fill plug out before the drain plug to ensure you can refill it. From the factory the fill plug is torqued to like 100 lbs and is a real bittch to get off.
To fill I snaked a 1" tube from the top of motor into the fill plug.
