I need some help. I have pinging and knocking under any acceleration ( hard or soft). The engine runs fine but it is anoying. Any suggestions as to what I should check first?
Re: pinging and knocking under acceleration?? (gwalsh88)
The ECM should pull enought timing to prevent noticible ping as soon as ping is detecetd.
Since that isn't happening I suspect you have a problem with either the ESC module or the knock sensor (these two units work together to send knock information to the ECM on our L98s).
A scan tool would be useful to see if the ECM is pulling timing but just can't pull enough to stop the ping.
If you replace the ESC, use the upgrade P/N shown on my site (link in my sig. below).
Re: pinging and knocking under acceleration?? (gwalsh88)
I usually put in super but my last tank was 87 octane ( the service station where I had some work done filled it up for me at n/c) Since then I have put in about 10 gallons of super but no difference. I will check codes using the paper clip method. Thanks

If it started knocking after the 87 octane was put in it, run it as close to empty as you can and fill it with high octane. It may take a fill-up or two to get back to normal.
