I just flew to Michigan and picked up my new to me 96 CE and drove it 500 miles home. I noted the coolant temp would read 210 or so often, usually in towns. Also since driving around my hometown, it would fog up the outside of the windshield and I could smell coolant. At one point I saw coolant dripping out the right front inner fender.
The previous owner states he overfilled the coolant prior to my picking up the car, but wouldn't a 500 mile ride take care of that? Any suggestions as to what is causing this would be appreciated.
210 is normal. The fans on the Corvette are programmed to come on around 230. As for the coolant leak, maybe the previous owner overfilled the overflow. By the way...Welcome.
Install a manuel fan switch, that was the best thing i've done to my car. The temp was crazy during city driving and the car felt sluggish too. When i'm stuck in traffic i switch them on and it drops the temps as far as 165 amazingly and the car feels more responsive. Best mod for the Late C4's
There's also PCM tuning to switch the fans automatically if you can't be bothered. I personally think the switch is better.
Welcome. Mine runs about 196 while moving and heats up rather quickly in stop and go. When it hits 230 the fan will come on and cool it down. If it gets above 230 maybe your fan is not coming on. If you turn on A/C fan will stay on and it will run cooler. Coolant leak could be possible over-fill but w/ window fogging could be possible heater core. Need to determine exactly where coolant is leaking from. Good luck, Guy
The fogged winshield usually is the AC running through the defroster vent. Check the vacum port connector on the rear of the right hand fuel rail; may have a crack or bad hose.
The temps are normal for the '96 you have just gotten. . I to think the previous owner overfilled the coolant recovery tank. With the car cold, check this by looking at the little dipstick inside that tank which is located in the front right wheel well under the headlight. Should be white plastic. See if it is above the cold hashmark.
:iagree: with the manual fan switch... Install is easy and its great to have when u need it.... I also :iagree: with the other posts that say the temp u are running is normal but, again, the manual fan is nice to have.
I have had a 94, 95 and a 96 and the 96 was the best of the bunch...
Temps sound normal, my friend is having the same situation, he's fixing it with the Hypertech III....it programs the fans to come on sooner.. :steering:
