Hello, I just got my first Vette, it is a '91 Black Coupe. It runs fine at speed, but in stop and go traffic it starts to run hot. My mechanic has convinced me that it was the temp sensor and the radiator. We replaced both. Last night, the car started over heating again. This time, I popped the hood and watched the cooling fans. The temp gauge in the car was at about 240 -250 and neither fan had turned on. Acording to the mechanic, the fans were kicking on, but he may have only been looking at his diagnostic computer. I have ordered new fan relays and a manual fan switch. What else should I check?
I'm not sure about the 91, but in my 95 LT1 the fans come on low speed at about 228 and high at 235. Sounds like yours should have been running. The AC should always kick them on. Another trick is to put in a 160 degree thermostat in place of the standard 180 - this helps a lot. C4's tend to run hot, and the temp always climbs in traffic, but your post says something needs attention.

Re: "91 Running Hot (Sportstertaz)
James,
I can tell you that mine runs at 200-210 on the highway and around town and at idle it goes up to 240-250. This gives me the creeps, but everyone including my mechanic and parts guys say this is not unusual for these cars. I did pull my radiator one weekend and washed the sand out of it. It did help a little.
Just go fast and you will have no problems!
