well, my car still doesn't want to start all of the time and stalls at idle. i ordered a new ecm today and should get it in a couple of days. i figured $100 is a small fee, and it's probably due. if that doesn't work, anyone have any suggestions.
situation:
turn ignition to on, cooling fan turns on (A/C is off, no pins in ALDL), car won't start. the fan will turn off randomly and then the car will start, once i hear the fan kick back on, the car will stall. this is when the car is still cool.
i figure it has to be something electrical (new distributor, plugs, wires, etc. and I have fuel pressure at the rails). MAF and TB are clean.
 i dont believe i have ever run across a problem like this. i woulda done the same thing. seems like the only reasonable cause for your problem.
I replaced my ecm/prom. Idle sucked, stalled at stoplights, cooling fan would not come on with a/c. After replacing the ecm/prom the high beam indicator light begin to work. I wonder if the highbeam indicator is a quick referrence for the shop to see if the ecm is working properly. I know it sounds dumb but you explain why mine only started working after replacing the ecm/prpm. ;)
1) ECM in limp home mode.
2) Stuck relay
3) Grounded fan wire
And probably a few more. I had an ECM fry once and the fan was on 100% and it was a total bitch to try and get the car running. Once it DID run you had to keep it at a certain RPM or it would die.

that's exactly what happens to me. i have to keep the gas down when at idle to keep the rpm's up. same when i start it, if it starts, i have to keep the gas pedal down a little. i sure hope this fixes it. i hate being vetless.
just 32, but i've been getting the egr code for about 2 years. the no codes kind of led me to think that it was the ecm. how does a part that is bad, report itself?
also, when it was acting up, i couldn't pull any codes. i'd put the wire into the pins on the aldl and turn the ignition to on. but the cooling fan was coming on anyways and the ses wouldn't even blink the code 12.
 well wondering if you had any others associated with your decision.. but very good point, definately hard to report on yourself..ecm... but glad to hear your running...

Re: ordered new ecm (86_RedRider)
My 90 did something similar. The car would run so rich that it wouldn’t idle, checked the TPS Sensor, and it was within specs. This problem drove me nutz for 3 months.
Finally gave in and bought the ECM to PC cable, and used the Craig Moats software to monitor the ECM. I would have never found the root of the problem without it.
Even though the TPS was working correctly, the ECM was misinterpreting the signal.
Instead of showing an idle voltage the ECM was reading full throttle voltage from the TPS at idle and subsequently poring fuel into the cylinders.
When I changed the engine oil, it was grey in color.
I replaced the ECM with a Napa unit, and worked great for 2 weeks. Replaced it under the 12 month warranty, and it’s been fine ever since.
